PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently use a recording area by controlling the size of the set of continuous logical blocks in accordance with the kind of a selected mode at the time of recording data in the unit of the set of continuous logical blocks. SOLUTION: AV data are recorded on a recording disk in cluster units in accordance with a recording mode. Recording modes are modes in a system capable of varying a recording bit rate and indicate an edit mode recording editingly processable data, an SP mode recording picture data with a relatively high quality which is inferior to that in the edit mode and an LP mode recording the picture data for a long time although the quality of the picture is not high so much. The cluster is a set in which several logical blocks are collected and is the minimum unit on the disk at the time of recording the data. The size of the cluster is varied in accordance with recording modes, for example, the size is the largest when the mode is the edit mode and is the smallest when the mode is the LP mode and is the intermediate between the both modes when the mode is the SP mode.
