PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a catalyst useful for hydrogenation treatment, which is used in the hydrogenation treatment of hydrocarbon oil, especially, heavy hydrocarbons such as crude oil, vacuum light oil, atmospheric distillation residual oil and vacuum distillation residual oil, and exhibits a high decomposition activity, in which thereby the yield of intermediate distillates such as kerosene, light oil or the like is high, and which has a high desulfurization activity. SOLUTION: The method of producing the catalyst useful for hydrogenation treatment comprises suspending Y-type zeolite containing non-framework alumina(NFA) in an amount of >=5 wt.% and having a crystallinity of >=80% into an acid aqueous solution, then mixing the obtained suspension with an alkali aqueous solution at a mixing ratio such that the pH of resulting mixture becomes 7.0 to 9.5, and further mixing the resulting mixture with a porous inorganic oxide precursor.
