PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a remaining amount and reduce costs by enabling information on a roll paper which changes every moment in accordance with the use of the roll paper to be recorded to the roll paper practically with the use of a bar code or the like. SOLUTION: In reading the information on the roll paper 2 recorded to a side face or a core material of the roll paper, a rotating amount or a rotating speed of the roll paper 2 is detected, and an outer diameter and the remaining amount of the roll paper 2 are calculated from a relation to a transfer length or a transfer speed of the roll paper 2. The information on the roll paper 2 which changes every moment in accordance with the use of the roll paper 2 can be recorded to the roll paper 2 or the core material 1 practically with the use of the bar code or the like. The other control of an ink jet recorder is also enabled while one sensor is shared, so that costs can be reduced.
