PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the recovery of a failing heart. SOLUTION: In this device for assisting the failing heart by use of a single blood displacement chamber 19 and a single cannula 14, the cannula is inserted to an failing ventricular cavity 15 and connected to the blood displacement actuator 18. This device causes a displacement of blood at a critical time for a critical period in a time change curve of blood such that the systolic function of the heart is improved, or the cardiac output is increased to the normal pressure. This device further improves the diastolic function by increasing the ventricular compliance to improve the rapid relaxation of the ventricular wall. This device provides an additive external work without deteriorating the mechanical function of the failing ventricle, and further reduces the energy consumption of the failing heart to improve the coronary perfusion. Consequently, this device improves the balance between the energy supply (coronary perfusion) to the ventricular wall and a mechanical request. |
