PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst useful for oxidizing ethylene in a vapor phase, which has excellent selectivity and service life, and to provide a method of producing the catalyst and a method of producing ethylene oxide using the catalyst. SOLUTION: The catalyst useful for oxidizing ethylene is obtained by supporting Ag on a carrier whose main aggregate is α-alumina and which contains aluminum in an amount of 90 to 99.7 mass %, expressed in terms of Al2 O3 , silicon in an amount of 0.1 to 6 mass %, expressed in terms of SiO2 , calcium in an amount of 0.01 to 2 mass %, expressed in terms of CaO, and potassium in an amount of 0.01 to 2 mass %, expressed in terms of K2 O, when it is completed. In the above catalyst, the number of silver particles per unit surface of the catalyst is 1×10<11> to 1×10<13> /m<2> before a reaction gas passes through the catalyst. Further, the method of producing the catalyst and the method of producing ethylene oxide using the catalyst are also provided. |
