Graft copolymers suitable for use as moulding powders are prepared by exposing a mixture of at least one cellulose derivative and at least one polymerizable monomer to ionizing radiations, such as gamma rays. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose mono-, di- or tri-acetate, cellulose acetobutyrate, or ethyl cellulose, and the monomer may be styrene, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile or trichlorethylene. The monomer may include a small quantity of a polyfunctional monomer such as allyl acrylate, diallyl adipate, diallyl cyanurate, diallyl phthalate and divinyl benzene. Plasticizers may be added before or after polymerization. An example describes the production of a moulding composition by forming a graft polymer by irradiation of a mixture of cellulose acetate, vinyl acetate and phenyl salicylate, and then mixing with a composition comprising polyvinyl chloride, an epoxy resin and basic lead stearate. |
