The removal of volatile compounds, e.g. tobacco compounds, from interiors comprises passing the air through a solid substrate, with impregnation in the air filters. A mixture of inorganic supports is impregnated with a highly oxidizing solution, so that the photocatalytic surface converts the contaminants to water vapor and carbon dioxide and also inert contaminants.
