The dielectric coating of a surface-wave transmission line is circumferentially interrupted to permit conductive contact with the launching means. The line shown in Fig. 1A consists of a cylindrical conductor 4 surrounded by a dielectric coating 6. A longitudinal slit in the coating enables inner conductor 9 of feed line 13 to contact the conductor 4 whilst permitting axial movement of the surface-wave line. The line is guided by members 11, 12 which contact the dielectric coating and may be provided with rollers. Opposite guide member 12 and spaced from the feeder 13 by an odd number of wave-lengths lies a member 10 which short-circuits the conductor 4 to the launching horn 1. Members 10, 12 clamp the line and prevent transmission of tension from drum or other storage means behind the launching apparatus. In a modification (Fig. 3A), the dielectric coating 21 of conductor 19 is provided with a slit having grooved side-walls which may be pushed apart by the contacting members. The coating may be in the form of inserts 14-18, Fig. 2. Where a flat conductor 24, Fig. 4A, is used, the dielectric coating may cover one or both edges. |
