A lower rail (1) is fixed to the bodywork and an upper rail (2) is guided on it. The rails enclose an interior space (4) and the upper rail can be locked against longitudinal displacement in selected locking positions on the lower rail. A threaded rod (5) inside the interior space resists torsion on the upper rail. A nut (7) on the threaded rod can turn whilst the rod is stationary on the lower rail. The nut has a male thread, of the same pitch as the threaded rod, in which are engaged locking teeth (9.1) of a rack (9) extending in the length direction.
