PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element capable of enhancing its brightness without affecting the characteristics of the element, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: An organic EL element 10 has a space layer 2 provided between a substrate 1 and an element function part 10A. The space layer 2 functions as a low-refractive-index layer such that light incident from a transparent electrode layer 3 is refracted by the interface between the space layer 2 and the substrate 1. The angle of incidence when the light is incident on the interface between the substrate 1 and outside air is made smaller by an angle of the refraction than it is without the space layer, and components totally reflected beyond critical angle are greatly reduced. The space layer 2 is formed by forming a sacrificial layer 8 and the transparent electrode layer 3 on the substrate 1, and then etching only the sacrificial layer 8 for removal.
