PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of driving a plasma display panel, that can realize high luminance and high efficiency without causing any self-discharge. SOLUTION: In the method of driving the plasma display panel in which a plurality of discharge electrodes each of which is composed of a scan electrode and a sustenance electrode are arranged on one board of two boards which are disposed oppositely so as to form discharge spaces between them, during a sustenance period, sustaining pluses having negative polarity are impressed alternately to the scan electrodes and the sustenance electrodes. At this time, the peak value (Vs) of the pulse is set to a value higher than a sustaining voltage at the time the increase of the luminous efficiency of the plasma display panel begins first when the sustaining voltage is increased.
