PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder by which the labor in removing of documents can be reduced. SOLUTION: The automatic document feeder 1 is provided with a paper feeder 41 for feeding documents toward contact glass 5 placed on the top of a copying machine 3, a conveyer 43 for conveying documents from the paper feeder 41 to the contact glass 5 and carrying out the documents from the contact glass 5, after reading and a paper ejector 45 for ejecting the documents from the conveyer 43 and can open and close the contact glass 5 of the copying machine 3. The automatic document feeder 1 is further provided with a downstream document detector 81 for detecting the documents conveyed from the contact glass 5 to the paper ejector 45, and an interval measure 46 for measuring the time for which the downstream document detector 81 detects absence of document. After removing documents which jammed in the paper feeder 41 and in the paper ejector 45, it starts ejecting operations of the document on the contact glass 5 and completes the document ejecting operations, when the interval measure 46 measures a prescribed time.
