PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline storage battery having sufficient cycle characteristics by improving a hydrogen storage alloy electrode using a rare- earth hydrogen storage alloy. SOLUTION: This alkaline storage battery is provided with a positive electrode 11, a negative electrode 12 and an alkaline electrolyte. A substance prepared by mixing powder of the rare-earth hydrogen storage alloy with powder of a hydrogen storage alloy having a body-centered cubic structure and electrochemically storing and releasing hydrogen is used for the negative electrode. When the alkaline storage battery activated into a fully charged state is discharged in 1C (C is a hour rate), discharged capacity Q1 until the potential of the negative electrode becomes -0.75 V with respect to a Hg/HgO reference electrode and discharged capacity Q2 until the potential of the positive electrode becomes 0 V with respect to the Hg/HgO reference electrode are made to satisfy a condition of 0.02<=(Q1-Q2)/Q2<=0.15.
