PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a high-quality image without causing dirt such as vertical stripes in a read image, by making an image reader into such structure that it does not let rubbish, dust, etc., adhere onto an ADF reading glass of the reflected light path of an optical system during carriage of a manuscript. SOLUTION: An image reader is equipped with horizontal contact glass 10, the ADF read glass 3 for reading the image of the manuscript being carried by an automatic manuscript feeder, a light source, and a reading unit for reading the reflected light of the manuscript image obtained by the irradiation of the light source by the reflection of a plurality of shiftable mirrors. The reading unit shifts to read the image of a manuscript in reading the manuscript supported on the contact glass. The unit reads the image of the manuscript passing the ADF reading glass in condition that it is stationary in a preserved position, in reading the image of the manuscript carried by the automatic manuscript feeder. The ADF reading glass is equipped with an incline being inclined within a range of 45 deg. to 90 deg. downward to the horizontal plane.
