PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the breakage of an image display element caused by convergence of external light on the image display element. SOLUTION: A main body 501 contains the image display element 502 and a magnifying optical element 503a. The magnifying optical element 503a magnifies an image displayed on the image display element 502 and projects it on a mirror 506. A light beam reflected by the mirror 506 reaches a projection screen 503b along optical paths 505. When the magnifying optical element 503a and the mirror 506 are at positions A and a, respectively, the external light reaches the image display element 502. When the magnifying optical element 503a and the mirror 506 are folded and located at the positions B and b, respectively, the external light does not reach the image display element 502.
