PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the recognition rate of fingerprint matching by eliminating influence of a background image of an input fingerprint image. SOLUTION: The variable density value of inputted image is utilized, the inputted image is vignetted with Gauss transform (S40) and then, is once binarized (S41), dark parts are thereby made to be black areas for pixels 1 and light parts are made to be white areas for pixels 0. Since the black areas are specified as a fingerprint image part in this way, this part is masked to be returned to an inputted and detected image (S42), and white areas are cut as background information. A fingerprint image subjected to the above background separation processing is subjected to characteristic extraction processing.
