The vacuum brake system has a vacuum pump (36) driven by a belt (48) between pulleys (47, 49) on the pump and the engine crankshaft (66). A vacuum pipe (31) runs from the pump (36) via a non return valve into a brake force amplifier which is coupled to the brake master cylinder. A further vacuum tube runs from the rear chamber of the brake force amplifier to the pressure box (34) of a vacuum switch so that when the engine is not in motion the brakes can be applied thus operating the vacuum switch which is connected in the vehicles ignition circuit so that it switches in an electric motor (39) which is connected by a belt to the vacuu pump (36). the pulley (68) on the electric motor (39) and the main drive pulley on the vacuum pump (36) are provided with free running devices so that the electric motor cannot turn the engine crank shaft (66) or the crankshaft (66) turn the electroic motor.
