PURPOSE: A polyoxyalkylene derivative and its preparation method are provided, to improve the purity and the storage stability of the polyoxyalkylene derivative useful to modify biological materials. CONSTITUTION: The polyoxyalkylene derivative is represented by the formula 1, wherein Z is a residue of the compound having 2-8 hydroxyl groups; AO is an oxyalkylene group of C2-C18; n and m are independently an integer of 0-2,000, and both n and m are not 0 at the same time; a and b are an integer satisfying the condition 2≤a+b≤8 and 1≤b; R is a hydrocarbon group of C1-C30; and X is a divalent hydrocarbon group of C3-C10. Preferably the polyoxyalkylene derivative has a GPC purity of 90% or more and a degree of substitution of maleimide group of 90% or more.
