PURPOSE: A system and a method for providing place and price protection in a search result list generated by a computer network search engine are provided to manage search listings in a search database. CONSTITUTION: A database searching apparatus has a search engine(24) and a database(40). The database(40) includes a plurality of search listings. At least some search listings are associated with advertisers. The database(40) includes a search term specified by the advertiser, and a bid/desired rank associated with the search term and the advertiser. The bid/desired rank includes at least one of a maximum cost per click chargeable to the advertiser and a desired rank for the advertiser.
