PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix type liquid crystal display device which can keep a good display quality and be manufactured at a low cost even when both emission and non-emission of light are arranged within one frame period in the case of adopting an OCB mode. SOLUTION: Within one frame period, ON voltage for bringing thin film transistors into the ON state is sequentially applied to scanning electrodes to apply signals for picture display, and then OFF voltage for bringing the thin film transistors into the OFF state is sequentially applied thereto. Thereafter, a modulation voltage higher or lower than the gate voltage in the OFF period of the thin film transistors is applied to all the scanning electrodes at the same time according to whether the pixel electrode voltage is higher or lower than the counter electrode voltage, and then the gate voltage of the period in which the thin film transistors are in the OFF state is applied thereto again.
