PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a purifying capacity of an exhaust catalyst in an appreciable state by conforming a request for an engine stop and recovery processing of the catalyst to each other. SOLUTION: A control system, which is for an internal combustion engine that has an exhaust emission control device for purifying exhaust gas in an exhaust system and executes recovery processing for recovering a purifying capacity of the exhaust emission control device during operation, comprises a recovery processing determining means (Step S3, S4) for determining the state of execution of the recovery processing, a stop request determining means (Step S1, S2) for determining a stop request for stopping the internal combustion engine, and a stop retarding means (Step S3, S4) for retarding a stop of the internal combustion engine based on the stop request, according to the result of determination by the recovery processing determining means. |
