<p>The pistons (2) face outward into cylinders (1) bolted to a central casing (13) which contains the drive pinions (4) which mesh with racks on the central frame (3) connecting the pistons. The pinions have a one-way drive system (6,7), so that the pistons drive the output shaft (9) on the power strokes. Sensors (15-18) trigger injection of fuel (11) into the cylinders and operation of the sparking plugs (10). Air enters the cylinder heads past the injectors and exhaust gases leave through ports (12) near the base of each cylinder.</p> |
