PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner that can be improved remarkably in operability while the reliability of the air conditioner is maintained, and to provide a method of controlling the operation of the air conditioner. SOLUTION: In this air conditioner, a plurality of outdoor units 10A and 10B corresponding to a plurality of heat exchangers 2A and 2B are connected in parallel with an indoor unit 1 having the heat exchangers 2A and 2B. This air conditioner is provided with a load detecting means 13 which detects the load of the indoor unit 1, and an operation control means 14 which controls the number of the outdoor units 10A and 10B operated based on the detected results of the detecting means 13.
