PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gate valve preventing seat material from braking away during operation, and simply and inexpensively replacing and repairing the seat material of a valve element. SOLUTION: This gate valve 1 comprises a flow passage 2, and a valve casing 3 having a valve element storage space 5 branched off and formed from the flow passage 2. A valve element 8 is slide contacted on a flow passage side seat surface 16 of the flow passage 2 and a valve element storage side seat surface 15 of a branch portion 4, thereby shielding the flow passage 2 and the valve element storage space 5. A lateral peripheral groove ranging the whole periphery in a lateral direction is formed on a shielding portion 8a close to an operating portion of the valve element 8. A longitudinal peripheral groove intersecting the lateral peripheral groove is successively formed from a lower end edge of the shielding portion 8a of the valve casing 8 to both sides edge. A ring-shaped elastic seat material 18 slide contacting on the valve element storage side seat surface 15 of the valve casing 3 and shielding the flow passage 2 and the valve element storage space 5 is attached to the lateral peripheral groove of the valve element 8, and a strip-shaped elastic seat material 19 slide contacting on the flow passage side seat surface 16 of the valve casing 3 and shielding the flow passage 2 is attached to the longitudinal peripheral groove of the valve element 8.
