PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrial method for separating azulenes from such a raw material rich supplied in an amount as a heavy fraction of naphtha cracking, a kerosene fraction, light oil fraction or coal tar obtained from petro leum refining, by solving problems of a conventional technology, and therefore capable of giving the azulenes in an enough amount required for practical application and study. SOLUTION: In this method for separating the azulenes, the heavy fraction of the naphtha cracking, the kerosene fraction obtained from the petroleum refining or the light oil fraction therefrom is subjected to a distillation process so as to obtain a fraction containing the azulenes, then the fraction is subjected to an extraction process by using an acid, and further subjected to a back extraction process by using a water-insoluble solvent. The coal tar is subjected to the distillation process so as to obtain the other fraction containing the azulenes, then the other fraction is treated with a dilute acid, further subjected to the extraction process by using the acid, and finally subjected to the back extraction process by using the water-insoluble solvent.
