PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate an air cleaner correspondingly to the actual pollution level in a room without giving any feeling of incongruity to the user of the cleaner. SOLUTION: The air cleaner 1 is provided with a fan 27 which sucks the air contained in the room into the cleaner 1 (casing 2) and supplies cleaned air to the outside of the cleaner 1 in circulation, a gas sensor 30 which detects the pollution of the air, and a control means which decides the pollution level of the air based on the output of the sensor 30 and displays the decided pollution level or adjusts the air volume of the fan 27. The control means is constituted to simultaneously start the counting operation of a timer when the pollution level starts to fluctuate and, when the pollution level is identical for a prescribed period of time or longer, to discriminate that the pollution level is lowered.
