The mirror [1], eg rear view mirror, has a glass panel [3] with a coating [5]. Etched in this coating are seven segment display elements that are aligned with a display module [14]. The segment windows [15-19] are overlaid with an electro luminescent lighting unit [20] that is in the form of a surface capacitor having a pigment layer [24] and electrodes [30-34].
