PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain titanium oxide uniformly dispersible even without using a dispersant, a coating material which is mixed with the titanium oxide and is capable of forming a high-quality thin film having an adjusted refractive index, a coating film formed by using the coating material, a reflection preventing film using the coating film and a reflection preventing film to which the reflection preventing film is applied and to provide an image display apparatus. SOLUTION: This coating composition comprises (1) a rutile type titanium oxide having 0.01-0.1 μm primary particle diameter and the surface which is coated with an inorganic compound to lower or eliminate photocatalytic activity catalyst and to which a polymer is bonded by covalent bond, (2) a binder component and (3) an organic solvent. This coating film obtained by using the coating composition is suitable for forming a light transmission layer constituting a single-layer type or multilayer type reflection preventing film 17, especially a layer 18 having a medium refractive index.
