PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medicine for suppressing extension of cerebral infarction nest caused by cerebral ischemia. SOLUTION: This 1,2-ethanediol derivative is represented by the general formula [1] [R<1> is a heterocyclic group which may be substituted; R<2> is hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl-protecting group; R<3> is hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; nR<4> s and nR<5> s are each same or different and hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; R<6> is an amino group or ammonio group which may be substituted; n is an integer of 1-6] or its salt. The 1,2-ethanediol derivative or its salt exhibits suppressing effect of cerebral infarction nest and is useful as a medicine for suppressing extension of cerebral infarction nest caused by cerebral ischemia.
