A valve, such as a gate valve (10), includes a housing (12) having a fluid conduit (14) and defining a valve seat (16) and a support surface (18), a seal plate (20), a counter plate (22), an actuator (34) for moving the seal plate (20) and the counter plate (22) between an open position and a closed position, and a coupling mechanism (50) operatively coupled between the seal plate (20), the counter plate (22), and the actuator (34). The seal plate (20) is in sealed engagement with the valve seat (16), and the counter plate (22) is in engagement with the support surface (18) in the closed position. The coupling mechanism (50) retracts the counter plate (22) from the support surface (18) subsequent to retraction of the seal plate (22) from the valve seat (16) as the valve (10) is opened. |
