PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which controls brightness on a screen by using a polarization transforming element which changes the polarization direction of exit light to an arbitrary direction. SOLUTION: This polarization transforming element is provided with a luminous flux splitting member which splits incident light to P-polarization and S-polarization and a half wavelength plate, and by relatively moving the luminous flux splitting member and the half wavelength plate, is allowed to exit the P-polarization and S-polarization exiting from the polarization transforming element are made to be at an arbitrary ratio. |
