PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a negative display having partially different background colors without depending on RGB color filters, in a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element wherein polarizing plates 20 and 30 are respectively attached to the viewing side and the rear side of a liquid crystal cell 10 formed by enclosing a nematic liquid crystal L having a nearly 90 deg. helical structure in a cell gap, a plurality of polarizing plates 31-34 for displaying background to display the partially different background are stuck to the rear side of the liquid crystal cell 10 so that the axes of polarization thereof are parallel to the axis of polarization of the viewing side polarizing plate 20 and the parts between the polarizing plates for displaying background are light-shielded by light shielding masks 40. |
