PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for distilling styrene or a styrene derivative in which conventional disadvantages are eliminated. SOLUTION: This method for distilling styrene or the styrene derivative comprises by adding 1,2,4-benzenetriol or its derivative as a polymerization inhibitor to styrene or the styrene derivative represented by following formula (II) (wherein, Ys denote each an alkyl group, a haloalkyl group, an aryl group, an arylalkyl group, an alkoxyalkyl group, an alkylcarbonyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, an arylalkoxycarbonyl group or an alkylsilyl group) and distilling styrene or the styrene derivative in the presence of the polymerization inhibitor. The method provides prevention of formation of highly viscous polymeric substances in a distillation step and a high recovery ratio of the distilled styrene or styrene derivative.
