The spinning assembly has a station to break down the sliver into loose fibers, to be gathered at a collection surface as a thin web and be condensed into a narrow fiber strip to be spun into a yarn by a twisting jet. The suction opening (25), to condense the thin fiber web into a strip for spinning, has a tapered shape from an initial constant width (a) to a narrow suction slit (34). It has a sharp taper at the initial tapering zone (35) and a more shallow taper at a second tapering zone (36). The side edges (26,27) of the suction opening come together at a continuously reducing angle.
