Olefins are obtained from paraffinic feedstocks of higher carbon number by reaction in the vapour phase with oxygen in an unpacked reaction zone at below 700 DEG C. and substantially atmospheric pressure followed by rapid cooling. Continuous streams of the reactants are rapidly mixed and the common stream passed preferably with turbulent flow through the reactor at 500-700 DEG C. with a reaction time of 0.05-4 seconds before cooling. The molar ratio of hydrocarbon to oxygen is preferably outside the flammable limits and may be 2-5 : 1, the oxygen being added as such or as air; nitrogen or steam may also be added. Liquid hydrocarbons separated from the product may be recycled; part may be purged to prevent build-up of aromatics. Examples describe the conversion of feedstocks containing principally C5-C7 paraffins and of n-pentane into ethylene, propylene and butenes. Specification 901,662 is referred to.
