A method for producing a material responsive to a visible light which comprises titanium oxides comprising an anatase type titanium oxide,wherein titanium sulfate or titanyl sulfate is hydrolyzed to provide a hydrolysate,and the hydrolysate is washed with water to remove at least a part of a sulfate ion contained therein and then is heated in the presence of ammonia or a derivative thereof,characterized in that the washing with water is carried out until a washing filtrate has a sulfate ion concentration of 2000 ppm or less.The method allows the production of a photocatalyst having improved activity.
