A printing device for printing an image onto an image receiving medium comprises an input means for enabling a user to define an image to be printed by selecting characters and/or symbols, a printing means arranged to print said image as successive columns of pixels on the image receiving medium, and control means for receiving image data from the input means defining said selected character and/or symbols and operable to generate therefrom said successive columns of pixels for printing, wherein the control means comprising a first character development processor connected to receive said image data from the input means and operable to generate therefrom print data defining the image to be printed, and a second print control processor arranged to receive the print data and operable to generate therefrom said successive columns for printing.
