A games apparatus consists of a playing component (2) and at least one object such as a toy vehicle (7) or figure moveable relative to the playing component. One of the playing component and the object carries a covert code (60) and the other carries a covert code detector (22) for reading the code as the object (7) moves relative to the playing component so that when the code is read, the games apparatus responds to the reading of the code by, for example, identifying the vehicle or a characteristic of the vehicle or altering a characteristic of the object.
