The telephone has an identification device in the form of a SIM card. The SIM card and the battery pack form a handleable unit which can be placed in a receptacle in the telephone. When the unit is inserted, the contacts of the battery pack and the contacts of the SIM card make contact with corresponding counter-contacts. The SIM card may be associated with a prepaid account balance.
