The invention relates to a device for detecting and evaluating electromagnet ic radiation emanating from an area (2), essentially comprising two measuring chains, which are combined into components (5', 6'), and a control and evaluation unit (7), the measuring chains being equipped with diametrically opposed measuring heads, whose aperture angles (10) are identical. Each measuring head forms a boundary surface for the area (2) that is to be monitored and is provided with a transmitter and a receiver. Said boundary surface is intended for coupling radiation into or out of the area (2). To monitor the functional reliability of the device, a test signal is emitted v ia the transmitter of one of the measuring chains, part of said signal being reflected by the aforementioned boundary surface and part emerging in the ar ea (2). The reflected portion is coupled in by the receiver of the same measuri ng chain and is transmitted to the control and evaluation unit (7) via a line ( 8).
