The method involves a first user (BS) sending a control message to a second user (MS), the second user carrying out measurements in the radio system depending on the control message and sending a report message with the results of the measurement. At least two formats can be selected for the control and report messages. Format information is transmitted in the radio system stating the format in which the control or report message is transmitted. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a radio system for transmitting data between subscribers (b) a transmitter for transmitting data in a radio system (c) and a receiver for receiving data in a radio system.
