PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a method and an apparatus for calculating speed by which the precise rotational speed of a motor can be found. SOLUTION: The speed calculation apparatus is provided with a clock-pulse generation means 5, a timer counter 6 of counting a clock pulse signal, a holding means 7 for the timer counter which holds its counted value, an encoder 2 for the motor 1, a pulse counter 3 of counting an encoder pulse signal, a holding means 4 for the pulse counter to which a pulse data acquisition signal is input so as to hold the value of the pulse counter 3, a holding-signal generation means 9 to which a timer-data acquisition signal and the encoder pulse signal are input so as to output a holding signal and a computing part 8 which calculates the speed of the motor 1 on the basis of the respective values of the holding means 4, 7.
