PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the determination of the position of a teat. SOLUTION: The apparatus for the determination in the spatial position of the teat 21 of an animal is provided with a first transmitter element 13 which emits a first ray of light 27 to a first subregion A in a space, and a second transmitter element 14 with emits a second ray of light 27' to a second subregion B in the space. The first subregion A and the second subregion B constitute the space. A first receiver element 18 is arranged so as to receive reflected light of the first ray of light 27. A second receiver element 17 which is different from the element 18 is arranged so as to receive reflected light of the ray of light 27'. A single mirror 3 which can be turned around a rotating shaft directs the ray of light emitted from each transmitter element to the corresponding face of the corresponding subregion in the space and/or directs the ray of light reflected from the corresponding subregion to the corresponding receiver element. The apparatus is provided with a means by which the ray of light emitted from each transmitter element is directed to the determination face of at least two separated positions in the corresponding subregions in the space.
