PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for evaluating the biocompatibility of a material completely under in vitro conditions. SOLUTION: A material surface and a cell-containing liquid such as blood are brought into contact with each other for a fixed time under in vitro conditions, the cell-containing liquid is collected, and then a fluorescent coloring matter precursor is introduced into the cell for converting the change in the environment in the cell into fluorescent intensity for measurement. The fluorescent intensity of the cell where the similar operation is made is measured without any contact with the material. The fluorescent intensity is compared, thus evaluating the biocompatibility of the material. AS the difference in the fluorescent intensity between both of them is smaller, the material has biocompatibility. By adding a cell activation agent after introducing the fluorescent coloring matter precursor, the fluorescent intensity can be improved, thus performing accurately evaluation. By using cells that can be acquired in a mass, in vitro evaluation can be made accurately with high sensitivity.
