PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bright and compact eccentric optical system for realizing imaging and image observation by making the pupil of the optical system noncircular, and to provide a projection display device using the same. SOLUTION: This eccentric optical system 10 is equipped with at least one reflection surface 12 or 13, at least either of which has a curved surface shape to impart power to luminous flux, has a pupil, whose size is different in orthogonal two-axis directions, and satisfies the conditional expression: 1<EPDx/EPDy<100, where EPDx is the length of the pupil in the longest axis (major axis) direction, and EPDy is the length of the pupil in the shortest axis (minor axis) direction.
