A health management system for providing customized healthcare information (102) to the user in response to input regarding topics of interest to the user is disclosed. The customized healthcare information generated by the system preferably includes a list of potential treatments for a specified condition. The system further provides the user with healthcare coverage information with respect to the treatments that are covered by the user's insurance plan. The treatments preferably include physician visits, specialist visits, laboratory tests and exams, medication, and alternative treatments, such as accupuncture, holistic aids, vitamins and over-the-counter drugs. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the system includes a pharmacy section for ordering prescribed medication (140). When a prescription is inputted, the system preferably provides information regarding alternative medications to the prescribed medication.
