The display device has a layer (1) of individually controlled liquid crystal cells (2) sandwiched between 2 polarisation layers (3,4), acting as a polariser and an analyser and a rear illumination device (6). The analyser polarisation layer is divided into raster surfaces (15,16) with 2 different polarisation directions, each raster surface associated with a given number of liquid crystal cells. The liquid crystal cells associated with raster surfaces having different polarisations can be controlled via image point information for different images.
