New liquid crystal compounds are phenyl isothiocyanate compounds 4-substituted by a group with 1-4 rings or ring systems linked by difluoromethylene-oxy or oxydifluoromethylene bridge(s) and optionally other bridges and/or direct bonds. New liquid crystal (LC) compounds are phenyl isothiocyanate compounds of formula (I) 4-substituted by a group with 1-4 rings or ring systems linked by difluoromethylene-oxy or oxydifluoromethylene bridge(s) and optionally other bridges and/or direct bonds. R<1> = H or 1-15 C alkyl, optionally with a CN or CF3 or at least one halogen substituent, in which CH2 group(s) may be replaced by O-, -S-, -CH=CH-, -CC-, -CO-O- or -O-CO-, without directly linked O atoms; A<1>, A<2> = 1,4-cyclohex(en)ylene, in which 1 or more non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by -O- or -S-, or 1,4-phenylene, in which 1 or 2 CH groups may be replaced by N, or piperidin-1,4-diyl, 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene, phenanthren-2,7-diyl, naphtha-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphtha-2,6-diyl or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphtha-2,6-diyl, any of which may have halogen substituent(s); Z<1>, Z<2> = -CF2O- or -OCF2- or, in one case, -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -CH2CH2-, -(CH2)4-, -C2F4-, -CH2CF2-, -CF2CH2-, -CF=CF-, -CH=CH-, -CC- or a single bond; a = 0, 1 or 2; b = 1 or 2; and L<1>, L<2>, L<3> = H, F or Cl. Independent claims are included for: (1) LC medium containing >= 2 mesogenic compounds that contain compound(s) (I); (2) Electrooptical LC display containing the medium.
