A mechanical stapling device (10) for fastening deep tissue during the closing of peritoneal side of a stab wound, which is associated with a laparoscopic surgical procedure, is provided. Also provided is a unique staple (72) for use with the stapling device (10) of the present invention. A method of using the device (10) and staple (72) of the present invention is also provided.
