Two transformers (T1,T2) which have open magnetic circuits are located side by side and perpendicularly to the path of an object (4) which is to be detected. The transformer primary windings are connected in series and supplied from a 3-6 Khz source (8) and the secondary response from windings also connected in series is measured by a detector unit (9). The passage and direction of the object is revealed by the changes in magnetic reluctance
